Former Bishop Cavalier About Child Sex Abuse

“In an interview that aired Thursday, Roger Vangheluwe, the former bishop of Bruges, spoke of his sexual abuse as ‘a little game,’ that involved fondling, but no ‘rough sex.'”

  1. The attitude of Catholic clergy is apalling. Do not the children of the world have a right to be protected from sexual predators? Is the right to grow up unmolested a basic human right?

It seems to me that the Catholic church has allowed sexual abuse of minors to occur through ommission or commission. Surely there is a way to prosecute this in the civil courts of the world. The statute of limitations seems a very poor excuse for not prosecuting…Betty Anne

  2. I’ll bet he wants us to believe those were the only two boys he abused. This stuff never ceases to amaze me.

Vangheluwe complained in the hourlong interview that the church was targeted by abuse probes, while other sectors, like sports organizations, were let off too easily.

“Why is it different for priests than for other situations?

we were taught that a priest was taking the place of Jesus on earth.do you think Jesus would recognize his church if he came back today?

    • SW, I agree. That is the same reaction I had to that question he posed in the article about “Why is it different…?” If he has to ask that question, then he should not be a priest. Do we look to all of our children’s coaches as extensions of Jesus on Earth? I think not. Are all of our children’s coaches supposed to be our moral leaders? I think not, although, in light of the abuse we’re hearing about, perhaps we’re better off looking to some of our children’s coaches rather than some of the priests. Perhaps some of our children’s coaches would know better that “playful fondling” is child sexual abuse when it’s a man with an 8 year old!

This man has left no doubt in my mind, from his remarks, that he is a pedopohile. Unfortunately, he doesn’t see it in his own mind. What scares me is this,” How many other priests don’t see it in their own minds either?”

  4. This is insanity, and terrifying! It is more like a crime organization that is so much bigger than we are. God help us.

  5. Where is the surprise here?

You may hate me for saying the truth, but the entire Catholic church is cavalier on child rape, including priests, bishops, popes, and the remaining congregation.

We now know with absolutely certainty that thousands of priests raped tens of thousands of children.
We now know with absolutely certainty that bishops, cardinals and popes hid the truth about it.
We now know with absolutely certainty that the congregation could have stood up and screamed about it in America, and could have picketed every day, and could have withheld money from the church, and could have sued them to get money back, and could have stood proudly in front of TV cameras and said they were fighting for the children that were raped.

Many did have the brains and strength to leave the church, and keep their kids away. However, the remaining congregation goes back like sheep, contributing money to the cause, hoping it will get better without doing anything about it.

In Philadelphia, one extreme small group of Catholics tries to request a meeting with the head of an organization that recently left known pedophiles with children. They are disappointed when he doesn’t give them a meeting. However, they continue to go to mass and contribute. I like you guys, but you’re cavalier. We’re talking about child rape here. What are you waiting for? Why are you so meek? Why are you afraid of a head of an organization that is cool with child rape?

There’s no downside to picketing and creaming at the top of your lungs. You can ‘t go to jail and you won’t go to hell. You WILL answer to God for being so cavalier on child rape, though.

I told you you’d hate me, but you can’t deny that every word is the truth. Truth is like that.

“……In Philadelphia, one extreme small group of Catholics tries to request a meeting with the head of an organization that recently left known pedophiles with children. What more is there to say?

  7. I’ve been wondering… how many pedophile priests had truly honorable intentions when they joined the priesthood, and how many joined the priesthood incognito so they would have access to children? I used to think it was the former — that they were men with a calling and honest intentions who turned out to have a deviant illness. After reading the Grand Jury report, I believe many of these men had no calling whatsoever. Maybe they didn’t even believe in God but simply schemed their way into the lives of unsuspecting families and children. The answer doesn’t change the end result, but the thought of someone in essence pretending to be a priest should make the “good guys” even more outraged and unable to remain silent.
