Note to Philadelphia Archdiocean Employees: Shut Up and Smile

The culture of the archdiocese becomes crystal clear through the lens of this article. Odd that Brian Tierney, the late Cardinal Bevilacqua’s spin doctor during the 90s, would go to bat for a teacher accused of misconduct but not a principal with a great track record. Hopefully the trial will answer those questions.

According to the suit, her trouble started on June 20, 2013 in a meeting with Carter to discuss staff cuts. She fought to keep staff and also mentioned a former O’Hara teacher who had been placed on leave for misconduct the previous January had been reinstated to a different school and given back pay at the urging of Brian Tierney, a board member of Faith in the Future Foundation and former publisher of The Inquirer.

  1. How do you like The Associationof Catholic Education filing a grievance…only to be dismissed by the AD? Classic. Sounds like the review board, the Charter and every other “fake” committee with no teeth in the rcc. Ultimately, the boys have final say.

  2. I sure agree, Survivor’s Wife, Also, why is every single story (not on here) reporting about the AOP from the AOP or one of its’ cronies as confusing as all get out? Is it just me? They have used the word “transparency” as often as we would use the word “the”, when I feel like they are doing the opposite. Every time I hear that word from them, I can never decide if I want to pull my hair out or just bang my head on my desk. Please, AOP, please find another word that fits what you are doing. UGGGGHHHH…

    1. MC: This is called doublespeak. Listen to a politician. It really doesn’t matter which party and you will hear the same language. You and I don’t understand what they are saying and that is their purpose. If we knew what they were saying ,we could hold them to it. It is telling that Church officials and politicians speak the same language.

  3. I think once this is over this teacher will have a smile on her face nobody can wipe off.

What is a concern is with all the abuse cases and now this what is the catholic educators who teach your children saying about all this ?

If the subject comes up I would love to be a fly on the wall and hear what is being said.

  4. Just one more unfortunate example, Dennis, of how, criminal, heinous, life destroying behavior is such a low priority our children are for these well educated “men of God” and their faithful flunkies. I’m assuming that they would turn me down for a free seminar using my Psychology degree and all my work experience in it!! I truly don’t think more even an abbreviated Psych. 101 class would shed one tiny AHA moment on their narcissistic and criminal personalities!!

  5. This is my favorite excerpt
“The suit maintains that Marie Rogai was a distinguished Catholic school educator who was told she did not smile enough and was too direct in a meeting with her bosses on Nov. 8 in which she was asked to resign”.

What does ‘too direct” mean? Did she ask questions, raise her voice, express frustration. I have learned over the past 3 years that decorum is so important in these situations..god forbid a person express emotion…the robot personality at all times is what is expected. When I reported a psych patient from the clergy treatment center was trespassing in the parking lot of a high school I was later told that I spoke in a “high pitch voice” when alerting the staff.. Hilarious..you just have to laugh. I wonder if the pitch of her voice was unacceptable when she was abruptly asked to resign?

    1. Reminds me of the whack job colonel in A Few Good Men.

“You can have the report…but you have to ask nicely.”

Takes the focus off how completely messed up their actions are if they discuss someone’s tone of voice or manner of speaking.

      You can’t make this up!

  6. This is the same game plan the hierarchy has been using for years. If any business treated their employees in such a way, there would be an uprising among its ranks. Religious organizations seem to get away with infringing on peoples rights and they claim they have the right to do so because they are a religious organization. And yet they hide behind the statute of limitations to avoid accepting responsibility for the sexual abuse of children. In fact they have moved priests from parish to parish to stay one step in front of the law. I wish the former principal much success in her endeavor and hope more employees have the courage to challenge this medieval institution that has been getting away with too much for too long.
