Accused PA Priest Passed to Paraguay Gets Promoted

Excerpt: Former Bishop Joseph Martino of the Diocese of Scranton allowed the Rev. Carlos Urrutigoity to transfer to a parish in the South American county of Paraguay after multiple witness statements in several court cases claimed that Urrutigoity routinely slept in bed with and had sex with boys in his case, calling it spiritual guidance.

Currently, Urrutigoity is vicar general of the Ciudad del Este diocese in Paraguay. That makes him the second in command, just under the bishop there. Part of his job is to investigate any claim of sexual abuse that might come to the diocese.

“Now he is in a position of power. I’m concerned for the children of Paraguay. From everything I’ve learned, Father Carlos has not stopped. This is a basic child protection issue,” said Patrick Wall, a former priest who is now a Minnesota-based advocate for victims of sexual abuse by clergy.

Editor’s Note: As Bishop Martino confirms children throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia this Spring, will he think about the “spiritual guidance” children in Paraguay are receiving? I’ve long admired his work on behalf on the unborn, this is so difficult to reconcile.

  1. It’s difficult to reconcile the actions of many bishops who are confirming our children in these next few months. So many are awed by their presence. We all know too much. As my son is confirmed in the next month, I will be trying to focus solely on the strength of his relationship with the Lord as that is what truly matters in the sacrament.

  2. Nothing should surprise you re Paraguay, Fernando Lugo, ordained a bishop by John Paul 11 was given a release from his vows to become President [for church political clout that backfired] unfortunately his tribe of little Lugo’s came out of the woodwork to claim their inheritance, all fathered in the line of duty….later to be impeached for not fulfilling his campaign pledge/s
That’s Latin America where our present pope hails from and the failthful have been taught to focus on the supernatural dimension of the priesthood……..interesting concept.

    1. Wherever he is the church would have welomed him back into the fold for sure with little Lugo’s dropping out of sight……
In Australia mother’s if acceptable, are offered alernatives as in brother/sister arrangements…..depending if the clerical dad has acknowledged their offspring by registering them in their name and continues on with their vocations.
If married and the cuckolded husband isn’t switched on, the child assimilated into the family unit and the clerical dad comes for tea……

      1. Hadit,

Thanks, what is a seminarian? Isn’t St. Gregory’s a high school(wasn’t)? Need to know when reading about the grooming process.

        1. St. Gregory’s was a boarding school for boys 9th-12th. It was not a seminary, rather a high school. But the main objective of the Society’s clergy on campus was to bring boys into the fold. The use of the word “seminarian” in the article should not be understood in its strictest sense. It would be quite common for a traditionalist school to refer to its boy-students as “seminarians.”

          1. Thanks, needed the clarification – different than the college age Brisson Seminary student. These priests were abusing kids in a boarding without their parents there to protect them. Parents didn’t expect that behavior from a priest never mind a traditional priest. Sounds like the Society of St John is based on man-boy relationships. Do these people understand that these relationships are unacceptable?

  3. What a long in sordid tale in these articles. I am confused, it seems that Bp Martino did more than Timlin to address these issues .

    1. Bishop Martino did more than his predecessor, but nothing of any consequence aimed at the protection of minors. This abusive priest is now a Monseigneur -?!
